Requiem Service or Hokehankisd is a short memorial service drawn from the Canon for the Office of the Dead (performed daily during the Night Hours, the first prayer service of the liturgical day). For historical reasons, it has become customary to perform this service immediately following Divine Liturgy on Sunday mornings.
Although the Armenian Church's prayers and hymns for the deceased are performed for all Apostolic Christians who have fallen asleep, it has become customary for the faithful to request that names of deceased loved ones be mentioned during the prayers.
Currently, the Requiem service is offered every Sunday. On the five major feast days of Nativity, Pascha (Easter), Transfiguration, Assumption and Exaltation of the Holy Cross, as well as on the lesser feasts of Palm Sunday and Pentecost, Requiem service is offered on the following day, which is designated as "Remembrance of the Dead."
